The Court Leet of The Worshipful Town Mayor
and Chief Burgesses of Warwick
Established 1554
Looking after Warwick since 1554
Founded in 1554, the Court Leet was Warwick’s original legal body, established in 1554 by Royal charter of Queen Mary I.
The Court exercised manorial and minor judicial functions, such as courts with juries and presentments so that townsfolk had their say.
The Court checked that the quality and price of bread, meat, fish and ale from the town’s shops was fair and wholesome for the people of Warwick.
Over time its legal powers became ceremonial; today it preserves traditions, supports civic life and fundraises for charities, community groups and individuals in need in Warwick.
MEMBERS OF THE COURT LEET
The Court comprises 24 Jurors, including the Bailiff, the Low Bailiff, and the Foreman, Ealdermen, and Officers appointed to roles such as Steward, Beadle, Herald, Chaplain, and Sergeant at Mace.
Other posts held by Jurors include Ale Tasters, Fish Taster, Flesh Taster, Bread Weigher, Cheese Taster, Town Brook Looker, Surveyor of Buildings, Overseer of Pavements, and Surveyor of Parks & Open Spaces.
